India’s seventh consecutive ODI victory:Lanka down by 15 runs

Lanka down by 15 runs

Colombo, Jan 31: India held their nerve in a nail biting finish to beat Sri Lanka by 15 runs in the second ODI played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday and go 2-0 up in the five match series.

Left handed batsman Thilina Kandamby played a magnificent knock of 92 not out to bring Sri Lanka within sniffing distance of a victory but failed to get enough support towards the end as the home team needed 21 runs to win off the last two overs.

Lanky pacer Ishant Sharma came up with yet another brilliant performance, finishing with figures of 4 for 56 off nine overs. Zaheer Khan, Pragyan Ojha and Praveen Kumar took a wicket each.

This is India’s seventh consecutive ODI victory.

Chasing India’s total of 256, Sri Lanka looked down and out at one stage after being reduced to 36-3 until Kandamby and Jayawardene came together to put up a century partnership. Jayawardene’s wicket, however, opened the door for India even as the young southpaw waged a lone battle at the other end.

The required rate for the Lankans climbed steeply and crossed the seven run mark in the 30th over as Kandamby and Jayawardene tried to rebuild the innings after the early blows. Jaywardene was out for 52 while trying to hit Ojha and holed out to Yusuf Pathan.

It looked like a cakewalk for the Indians as the required rate touched the nine run mark in the last 10 overs with just 4 wickets in hand but some great hitting by Kndamby ensured that the Lankans were always in the hunt.

The dreaded run out then came to haunt the home team as three batsmen went back in just 16 balls.

During India’s innings, Yuvraj Singh came up with a brilliant 66 run knock after Virender Sehwag had smashed 42 upfront to help the Indians put up a competitive total of 256/9 on the board.

The Indian innings did not start ideally either as they lost 3 wickets within the first 13 overs with just 83 runs on the board. Sehwag started in customary fashion but Sachin Tendulkar who came out to open the innings was out to a bad umpiring decision after scoring just 6.

After Sachin’s dismissal, Sehwag and Gambhir played aggressively but could not last long. Gambhir was out caught by wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara off Farveez Maharoof while Sehwag followed him shortly as he was run out while trying to steal a third run. Gambhir made 27 runs off 31 balls.

Yuvraj who came in at the fall of Gambhir’s wicket played with ease before he was out LBW to another dubious umpiring decision even as replays showed a big inside edge.

Skipper Dhoni played sensibly, scoring just 23 in his 15 overs long stay at the wicket but he was out caught behind the wickets off Maharoof.

Mendis too captured the wickets of Zaheer Khan for 17 and Praveen Kumar for 15 towards the end but Muralitharan who needs just two wickets to become the highest ODI wicket taker could not do any damage.

Satyam HR dept starts employee verification

The human resources department of Satyam Computer Services has started verification to ascertain the company's headcount, following the Andhra Pradesh CID's claim that there were 13,000 ghost employees on the rolls of the IT firm.

The human resources department of Satyam Computer Services has started verification to ascertain the company's headcount, following the Andhra Pradesh CID's claim that there were 13,000 ghost employees on the rolls of the IT firm.

"Our HR department is now verifying the employee details," the company's spokesperson said on Saturday.

"As of now, we believe there are 53,000 employees, which is subject to verification and auditing," a Satyam spokesperson said on Friday, adding "the board has confirmed that prima facie there appears to be no basis to doubt the same."

The Andhra Pradesh CID had told the local court that Satyam's founder B Ramalinga Raju had admitted that the number of employees was inflated by over 12,000, by which he (Raju) drew over Rs 20 crore a month towards staff cost.

Ramalinga Raju's lawyer Bharat Kumar said the police claim is wrong.

According to a Satyam official, the line managers have been asked to provide details of the employees directly reporting to them.

The HR department's verification is based on active e-mail IDs and access card data captured across the offices of Satyam.

The company was supposed to have had 53,000 employees and operated in 66 countries with a customer base of 185 Fortune 500 companies.

UK urged to relax visa rules for skilled migrants

RELAXED RULES: To avoid further penalising the migrants, it will be fair if immigration rules are relaxed.

London: The British government should relax visa regulations for highly skilled workers from India and other countries outside Europe who face joblessness or cuts in salaries because of the credit crunch, a lobby group said on Friday.

The Highly Skilled Migrants Programme (HSMP) Forum said in a statement that visa extension rules that require evidence of high salaries or incomes from doctors, engineers and other professionals were unrealistic in the current economic climate.

With companies going into liquidation and reports of a difficult economic climate ahead, "migrants from outside the European region are the first to face salary cuts and redundancies", the forum said.

Forum executive director Amit Kapadia said skilled non-European migrants who are in Britain under a Points Based System "are finding it extremely difficult to obtain their further extensions due to the present stringent rules, which do not take into consideration the current economic downturn".

The majority of such migrants are from India.

"To avoid further penalising the migrants, it will be only fair if those immigration rules are somewhat relaxed by acknowledging the difficulties that migrants are undergoing in the present economic climate," Kapadia said.

"The credit crunch affects everyone from natural born citizen to immigrant," he added.

Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by 234 Runs

Sri Lanka inflict 234-run misery on Pakistan

Lahore: Tillakaratne Dilshan blasted a career-best unbeaten 137 while Muttiah Muralitharan grabbed his 500th ODI wicket as Sri Lanka bulldozed Pakistan by 235 runs to win the three-match cricket series 2-1 here on Saturday.

Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka piled up 309 for five before unleashing their bowlers who skittled out Pakistan for a meagre 75 in just 22.5 overs to inflict on the hosts a humiliating defeat in the all-important series decider.

Dilshan's 139-ball 137, studded with 10 fours, turned out to be the bedrock of the Lankan innings even though Sanath Jayasuriya (45), Kumar Sangakkara (50) and Thilina Kandamby (32) also came up with useful contributions.

For Pakistan, only two batsmen — Umar Gul (27) and captain Shoaib Malik (17) — managed double digit scores while four had ducks against their names as the hosts folded for their lowest score at the venue.

Lankan pacer Nuwan Kulasekara (3-17) and Thilan Tushara (3-33) mowed down the Pakistani top order before Muttiah Muralitharan (2-2) and Ajantha Mendis (1-12) completed the rout.

Muralitharan castled Sohail Khan (4) for his 500th ODI scalp which also dropped curtains on Pakistan's innings.

Muralitharan, already highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with 769 scalps against his name, needs three more wickets to overtake Wasim Akram (502) to top the ODI charts as well.

Pakistan needed an extraordinary effort to chase down such a mammoth target but the first 22 runs cost them six frontline batsmen and the match was virtually over there. The rot started in the second over when Thushara trapped Younis Khan (4) and that triggered off a batting collapse.

In-form Salman Butt fell to Kulasekara for the a first ball duck, while Thushara went on to claim the wickets of Kamran Akmal (9) and Misbah-ul-Haq (0).

At the other end, Kulasekara added Khurram Manzoor (3) and Shahid Afridi (0) to his scalps to compound Pakistan's misery.

Gul and Shoaib Malik tried to delay the inevitable with a 46-run partnership but Ajantha Mendis broke the stand by claiming Gul and Sri Lanka needed another four overs to complete a facile win.

Earlier, Dilshan looked completely at ease in his makeshift opener's role and carried his bat through to guide Sri Lanka past the 300-mark.

Despite having two hard-hitters in the middle, Sri Lanka initially found boundaries were not easy to come by but Jayasuriya finally broke free in the 15th over off Rao Iftikhar Anjum which yielded 25 runs.

The first ball disappeared over long-on for a massive six, followed by back-to-back fours, five wide and another boundary as well.

The fifty that seemed up for grab eventually eluded Jayasuriya who miscued Gul to perish after a 50-ball 45.

But with Sangakkara and Dilshan on song, Pakistan struggled to stem the run flow. The duo added 104 runs for the second wicket at a run-a-ball rate and even when Sangakkara fell run out after a 58-ball 50, Sri Lanka were already eyeing a score in the vicinity of 300.
